My review:

Only a Fling is the first book in the Kasper Ridge series.  Archie Kasper (Ghost) has inherited Kasper Ridge resort in Colorado from Marvin, his eccentric great-uncle. He and his sister had limited funds but were trying to renovate it and get it running again. Ghost contacted some of his former Navy pilot friends for help with the project and a little treasure hunting.  This is Will (Fake Tom) and Lucy’s story.

Lucy took over her grandfather’s (Papa) construction company when he retired and is hoping to win the bid for the Kasper Ridge resort.  If she gets the contract the company will be financially stable, and they can rehire workers they had let go.  She was excited to see the resort restored and have it bring in tourists that will help the town.  The only drawback is working with Will, the arrogant but sexy project manager.  After watching everyone leave Kasper Ridge for the bigger cities, Lucy knows that Will will also leave after the resort job is done.  So, the only thing they can have is a summer fling before he leaves town as everyone else has.  

Will had spent his life living in his father’s shadow and trying to make him proud.  He followed his steps to become a Navy pilot and then returned home to work with his father.  When Ghost calls and offers him the job as project manager, Will sees this as an opportunity to finally make his own path in life.  His attraction to Lucy was not part of his plans he feels like she sees and understands him. He must decide where his future lies.

The book was well written, had perfect pacing, and was very entertaining.  The treasure hunt is the perfect subplot and definitely makes me want to read future books.  I loved all the intrigue and humor in the clues.  The characters are all charming and I can’t wait to see them all again in the next book.

She curls her top lip in a faint look of disgust, which ignites a flash of anger within me.

‘I’ve got to study.’ She goes to walk away but I catch her wrist and pull her back. Her eyes widen with shock at my physical action.

‘Dale, I appreciate this is your house and everything, but let’s just set some rules up front, shall we? I’m here for two weeks while your dad’s out of town, at his request, not mine. We don’t have to be best friends. I don’t care if you like me or not. I couldn’t care less, even. But while I’m here, I’m in charge, which means you will not leave this house without informing me first. I don’t care what you do, as long as it’s in this building, but I’d appreciate it if you would do me the honour of being civil when you speak to me.’

Her gaze is fixed on mine; she doesn’t answer, her teeth biting into her lower lip.

‘Do we have an agreement? Because if we don’t, you’re gonna have to stay by my side the whole two weeks I’m here. And I can tell you, that wouldn’t be very pleasant for either of us.’ I don’t let go of her wrist, holding her close as I speak, waiting for her to react to give me something back that I can work with to understand where she’s at. Her eyes are the colour of warm caramel. The smell of her shampoo fills the air with floral and fruity tones. She is stunningly beautiful, even more so, up close. I rethink what I just said; maybe spending two weeks with her by my side wouldn’t be too unpleasant after all. If she’d only drop the attitude.

My review:

Anderson Bexley pushed Hope Davies to leave Camp Bexley and Orcas Island when she received a better job opportunity because he didn’t want to hold her back from pursuing her career goals.  Hope had fallen in love with Anderson, and she spent three years waiting for him to realize it.  When he pushed her away, she finally decides she needs to go forward in life without him. Moving to Seattle was hard at first but Hope eventually settled into the cooperate lifestyle.  Until she is sent back to Camp Bexley for her job and realizes her heart still belongs to Anderson. 

“You remind me how to be happy…And by admitting that, I feel guilty, because you aren’t responsible for my happiness, but I can’t imagine happiness without you in that same picture.”

Anderson had always regretted driving Hope away but when she comes back one year later, he thinks it’s fate.  He is dismayed that Hope has changed so much and possibly moved on with someone else, but he wants another chance with her. 

This was a wonderful story that will touch your heart.  There is so much regret, grief, insecurities, and hope, it’s like being on an emotional rollercoaster.  Anderson had so much grief and took so much upon himself.  He worked hard to renovate the camp hoping his brothers would eventually return home.  Ultimately, he realizes they have their own dreams, and they were not the same as him.  Hope’s character started out sweet, but I was disappointed that she started “hooking up” with Dexter, her boss.  I didn’t understand why she did this if she was so worried about her career.  I felt like she had been using Dexter and really felt bad for him.  She never redeemed herself in my eyes, especially when she goes on and on about losing her job.  If she didn’t want to commit to a relationship with Dexter, then she should not have hooked up with him.  I really hope to see Dexter in a future book because he seemed to have a softer side underneath his business face.

My review:

Up in Smoke is the first book in the Hot in Chicago Rookies series by Kate Meader.   One Night Burn is the prequel, but it only contains the first few chapters of Up in Smoke.  Characters from the Hot in Chicago series make an appearance, but I have not read any books from that series and didn’t have any problems reading this book.  I really enjoyed meeting the Engine 6 team and Ramon’s family.  The book was fast-paced, easy to read, and had characters easy to connect with.  Ramon was the perfect grumpy boss, and I loved the cute-meet between him and Abby. After reading this book and loving it, I will certainly go back and read the Hot in Chicago series.
