Review: The Christmas Promise

The Christmas Promise The Christmas Promise
by Janice Carter
My rating: 4/5
Blurb:
The Christmas season…

Is perfect for new beginnings

After a tragedy seventeen years ago, author Ella Jacobs never wanted to come back to Lighthouse Cove. Not to the whispered rumors, the judgment or even to Ben Winters, the boy she loved. Now she’s returned in time for Christmas—and some much-needed closure. But old flames burn bright. Can Ella find her way back to Ben…or will the secrets of their past extinguish their love for good?

My Review:

This was a heartwarming second chance Christmas romance that was beautifully written.  It follows His Saving Grace and although I read it as a standalone, I feel like it would have been better if I would have read the previous book.  The characters were genuine, and their emotions touched my heart.

Ella Jacobs returns to the small coastal town of Lighthouse Cove seventeen years after one youthful prank led to the loss of a teenager’s life, years of guilt, and lost friendships.  She never wanted to return but when Grace Winters, her childhood friend, asked her to come Ella thought she could get her some closure by returning.  Ben Winters had loved Ella and would always wonder what their life could have been if the truth had come out at the time of the tragedy.  Instead, all the secrets led to Ella being blamed by the town residents.

This was a very emotional book and my heart hurt for Ella.  It took a lot of courage for her to return and face the people who blamed her.  She finally had the chance to tell her side of the story and receive some closure.

I received an ARC and am willingly leaving a review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Priceless Ink is book 5 in The Cortell Brothers series. It is recommended they are read in order.

Sofia
I couldn't do it. All I saw when I looked at Graham was my life going down the drain.
He didn't love me, which he made perfectly clear last night.
The corset was too tight and I was on the verge of a panic attack.
So, I ran...right into a sexy biker. He tore my dress and drove off into the sunset with me.
But that's where this romance ends.

Joe
Imagine my surprise when a sexy bride came running out of a church, right to my bike.
She was hot as hell, and when she asked me to take her away, I was more than willing to oblige.
But then she opened her mouth and I found out who she really was.
She was irritating as hell, so I screwed with her just to have some fun.
The funny thing was, as much as I wanted to send her home, something inside me just wouldn't allow that.

Review: Scrubbed

Scrubbed Scrubbed by D.C. Renee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb:
It was supposed to be a straight-forward contest. Everyday heroes. May the best one win.

I was going to shine, to show my own hero, Sidney, that I had what it takes to make it at Modern Family. Not to mention, I’d get to learn from her. Well, that part I did. Learn, that is.

And I even had the perfect contestant, the one I knew was going to win it all. Noah Shields, doctor and hottie. I’m talking the “you can scrub me down anytime you want, doctor” type of hottie. One problem. He didn’t want anything to do with the contest. Or me. He didn’t think he deserved the hero title.

He was wrong.

He was a hero. No, correction, he is a hero. He just needed a push to see it for himself without letting the demons from his past and the heartache he was harboring taint the good man he truly was.

I was just supposed to help him see – from the goodness of my own heart. That’s the thing, I involved my heart. And when that sucker came into play, I was no longer playing for him to win the contest. I was playing for him to win at life…not just survive…and I was playing with my whole heart. Because it was his.

And now the contest was over, and I’m left standing alone, wondering if his heart isn’t too damaged to be in it too.

My review:

This was a new author me and I enjoyed reading this book.  The pace was perfect, and the plot was developed.  The characters were easy to relate with and realistic.  Hadley oversaw the new contest “Everyday Heroes” for the Modern Family.  When she came across Dr. Noah Shields nomination, she knew he would be a good candidate.  He was an oncologist who had lost his wife to cancer two years previously.  Since then, he had felt as though he failed.  Hadley was just what Noah need, cheerful and genuine.  She brought light to Noah’s life and helped him realize he couldn’t blame himself for his wife’s death.  Noah was an everyday hero but never realized it.  He was so hard on himself and was not really living his life to the fullest.  Hadley helped him to see how his work helped to improve other’s lives.  This was such a great book and full of emotions, so have some tissues ready because it is a heartwarming story.

Review: Seducing His Secret Wife

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Goodreads link: Seducing His Secret Wife (Redhawk Reunion #2) by Robin Covington | Goodreads

Seducing His Secret Wife is the second book in the hot new Redhawk Reunion series.  The book was fast-paced and draws you in.  I loved the characters and how perfect they were for each other.  Neither of them wanted a long-term relationship, but they slowly change their mind as they fall for each other.

Sarina Redhawk and her siblings had been taken away from their parents and she had been placed in several foster homes over the years.  When she was old enough, she enlisted in the military.  She had spent several years just wanting someone to want her but has learned over time it is less painful if she leaves before they do.  While visiting her brother’s she takes a trip to Vegas.  Several drinks later she wakes up married to a stranger but leaves before he awakens.  Now she needs to find him so they can get it annulled.

Justin Ling lives up to his reputation as a playboy.  While visiting Vegas he marries a stranger and must find her and quietly dissolve the marriage.  His business is trying to merge with another, and he needs to keep out of the media.  He soon discovers his wife is his partner’s sister.  Now he must keep their marriage a secret, but he can’t seem to stay away from her. Soon he comes to realize he doesn’t want to give her up but will she want the same?

Review: Distracted

Distracted Distracted by Michelle Fernandez
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Goodreads Link: Distracted by Michelle Fernandez | Goodreads

Blurb:
Sabrina Kent is my best friend. Our childhood was carefree and full of daring adventures. Then we grew up, pursued our careers, and moved on with our lives. She's the girl I've loved since I was fifteen. The thing is, she doesn't know it, and I never plan on telling her.

The death of her parents brought us back to our hometown of Sunnyville six years ago. We reminisced and I was her shoulder to cry on. One thing led to another, giving each other a night I will never forget, and the bond that ended our friendship.

Now, another funeral brings me back home, and there she is, with her daughter. Sabrina is everything I want but can't have. I want to talk to her about our awkward night and rectify what we once had.

But just when things get right with us, complications arise, and outside forces threaten our lives.

My review:

Distracted is part of the Everyday Heroes World series and was a wonderful addition to the series.  It was fast paced and had an interesting storyline of childhood friends to lovers.  Sabrina and Spencer were best friends growing up until one-night things changed.  That night changed everything for Sabrina.  When her grandmother passes away, she returns to Sunnyville with her daughter.  Spencer had been secretly in love with Sabrina since they were teenagers, but he kept it a secret.  Now they are both in town again and secrets are exposed.  Just as they begin to think they will have a future together; an unexpected enemy sets out to destroy their happiness.  Will the past keep them apart or will Spencer be able to save Sabrina?

Review: Christmas Under the Northern Lights

Christmas Under the Northern Lights Christmas Under the Northern Lights by Annie O'Neil
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a new-to-me author and I’m so glad I got the chance to read this book.  It was a sweet second chance Christmas romance for two people who had gone to the remote island of Bourtree Island.  It was well written and had a developed storyline.  The characters were charming and the island residents were heartwarming.  Both Audrey and Cooper were both there to figure out their future and help the island residents by providing medical care.

Audrey Walsh was running to escape Christmas and her fiancé’s betrayal.  She was committed to spending five weeks being the district nurse to the community.  She was touched by the resident’s open hearts and their love for family.

Dr. Cooper “Coop” MacAskill grew up on Bourtree Island but had left it behind when he was old enough.  Now he has returned but feels guilty for not coming back before his grandmother passed.  Coop has been offered the job as the physician for the island but is not sure he wants to return after the hard time he had as a child living on the island.  Can Audrey and Cooper find their future on the isolated island providing medical care to the community?

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My review:
5 out of 5

This was a new-to-me author and I am so glad I had an opportunity to read her work.  The book was well written and drew me in from the beginning.  The characters were charming, and the little girls were so adorable.  I love marriage of convenience stories but usually do not find contemporary ones that work.  This author was able to make it work and did it magnificently!  The book was so easy to read and flowed smoothly.  The plot and characters had depth and were genuine.  I loved seeing Trinity and Omar’s relationship slowly grow from best friends to love.  Watching their lives change and grow as they found their way as a family was inspiring.  I’m so glad I discovered this author and look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

This was a new-to-me author and I wasn’t sure what to expect so I was pleasantly surprised once I started reading. It was well written, the pace was perfect, and the characters were charming. I love the way Lorelei and Jack slowly become friends and their relationship grows into love. It was interesting to watch how their two different lives were able to blend so well over time. The mystery of why Brodie’s life shattered in his senior year kept me reading until the end. I really enjoyed reading this book and will certainly be looking for future books from this author.

Luna Wu is a veritable crafting genius—she can bedazzle and bead so hard her Etsy site is one of the hottest in the world. As a jaded divorce lawyer, Alec Baxter scoffs at weddings and romance. But when his recently engaged brother begs him to participate in The Wedding Game, Alec grudgingly picks up a glue gun and prepares for some family bonding. But as they bicker over color swatches and mood boards, they find themselves fighting something else: their growing mutual attraction. While Luna is torn between family loyalty and her own feelings, Alec wonders if he might have been wrong about love and marriage all along…     Excerpt: “Are you ready?” Farrah says, coming from behind me and massaging my shoulders. I move my head side to side while we both hop up and down. “Did you do those finger exercises I told you about?” I flex my fingers and nod. “Yup, all warmed up.” “Do you have your game face on?” Farrah spins me around and grips my shoulders as I mean mug it at her. “Ooo, you’ve been practicing in the mirror. I can tell.” “When I brush my teeth. I really feel like I’ve mastered the scowl.” “Honey, you mastered the scowl years ago. Now you’re just coming into your own with it.” She holds up her hands, and I start boxing into them as we leap around the apartment. “Quick on your feet, quick on your feet.” Farrah swings her hand at me, and I duck. “Focus, hone your attention.” “Focused.” “Tell me, who’s going to kill it today?” “I am.” I bob back and forth and then give Farrah a one-two punch to her hands. “Who’s going to do anything necessary, even sit on someone’s face if you need to, in order to win today’s challenge?” “I am. Show no mercy. My ass is coming for your face.” Farrah pauses, winces. “I’m not sure I like that.” “Just go with it.” “Okay, Luna’s ass is coming for your face.” She shrugs. “Next week let’s work on your trash talk.” “Might be necessary.” Circling again, I box at Farrah’s hands, feeling light on my feet and ready for anything that comes my way. “You’re going to ignore all conversations from Mr. Snobby Shoes.” “I don’t even know he exists.” “Your eyes are on the prize. And what is that prize?” “Giving Cohen and Declan the best wedding possible.” “Exactly.” She lowers her palms. “Quick, flash me your hands.” I lift my hands, and she inspects them carefully. “You lotioned—good. Nails are clipped to a perfect length, and those fingers are stretched and strong. Rotate your wrists for me.” She lowers her ear to my wrists as I circle them around. “Perfect, no cracking, no tension.” She points to the ground. “Fast feet.” My feet start bouncing up and down, like in those football movies, and I hold my hands at my hips, ready for the call . . . “Draw!” Farrah shouts. I pull my glue gun from my hip and point it at her. “You’ve been glued.” Farrah claps her hands. “Reaction time was spot on. You’re ready.” “Yeah?” She nods. “You got this, girl. This competition is yours for the taking. And remember what we talked about: don’t focus on what you think will win . . .” “Focus on what will bring Cohen and Declan joy.”       About the Author: USA Today Bestselling Author, wife, adoptive mother, and peanut butter lover. Review: Sworn to Protect

Sworn to Protect Sworn to Protect by Kimberly Readnour
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sworn to Protect is part of K. Bromberg’s Everyday Heroes World which is a collection of books written by different authors who write about characters in Sunnyville, CA, the world that was created by K. Bromberg. The book was fast past and well written. It grabbed my attention from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down until the end. It was an enjoyable book to read and I loved revisiting the other characters in the Everyday Heroes World.
When Ethan Gillman saves the life of Ranger Regiment surgeon Nate Dixon, his last words were for Nate to take care of his family. Nate wants to fulfill his friend's request and then settle into civilian life after retiring. His plan is to stop in Sunnville, CA, and check on Mackenzie Gillman, Ethan’s widow, and their children, and then leave town. But he finds it impossible to leave town after meeting Mackenzie and her two sons.
Mackenzie’s life takes a drastic turn when her husband dies while on deployment. She has returned to her childhood town, Sunnyville, to be near her family. She’s determined to have a fresh start and finish her nursing degree. Her attraction and feelings towards Nate are not what a new widow should have, but he slowly becomes part of their lives.
