GROUND ZERO by April Canavan

Release Date: October 31

Ground Zero: The center or origin of rapid, intense, or violent activity

I carried her lifeless body out of a burning building.
One that collapsed on top of us, forcing us to fight for survival.
Where she gave her life so that I could live.
That nightmare wasn’t the happy ending I thought I’d find in the flames.
Turns out, it wasn’t our ending at all.
It was the beginning of our story.
The one where I fell in love without knowing what was happening.
Or the destruction she would thrust into my path.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
My review:

Ground Zero is the first book in April Canavan’s new series Birch County Fire (BCF).  I first read the Birch Police Department (BPD) series and I fell in love with the town of Birch and its people.  I was a little disappointed in this book because the BPD series was full of humor and lovable characters and that was what I was expecting with this one.  I still enjoyed the book, but the characters were a little more solemn than the ones in BPD.  I love how the characters and storyline seem so true-to-life.   This was Josh and Nia’s story, and I was glad to see Josh’s story.  He was a wonderful hero and I loved how compassionate he was.  I started out not liking Nia, but she eventually won me over.  I cannot wait for the next book in the series and hope the author adds a little more humor and jesting between the BCF crew than this one had.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Meet April Canavan

I live on chaos and coffee, and you’ll find it running through every single one of my stories.

First of all, I absolutely abhor writing anything biographical. In any form. I’m terrible at it, and I have the very firm belief that no one wants to know who I am. You’re here for books, right? But that doesn’t mean I’m off the hook.

I grew up sneaking over to my great grandmother’s to read her Harlequin novels. Those were delivered once a month in a ginormous box, and from the age of ten, she let me devour them in their entirety. I fell in love with romance, even the clean kind. And that, undoubtedly, led to many days and nights with my face buried in a book and the discovery that I wasn’t happy unless my hair was up, and I had a story in my hand.

I never wanted to write. I wanted to read. ALL the words. Until someone pointed out to me that I’d been writing my entire life. I just needed to put the book in my hand down and pick up a pen.

Once I started, I found out that I couldn’t stop. Now, I’m always writing. Or reading. Or chasing my son through the house to get the elusive hug he thinks I don’t need.

Oh, and I’m a Leo… which is completely on-point if you know me at all. I love being the center of attention. On my terms. When I can stay at home in my pajamas. With lots and lots of coffee on hand. And maybe a few snacks.

BELOW THE LINE by April Canavan

Release Date: September 28

Teri
Silence.
That’s all I had from him for years.
Broken promises.
Dreams of a life we should have had.
Except he left me behind.
And then he showed up, scarred and broken.
I can’t save him.
Hell, I can’t even save myself.
When he promises me the world, I know he’s full of shit.
But that doesn’t stop me from letting him in.
From hoping he’s not going to break me again.

Logan
I made promise after promise.
Broke every single one of them without looking back.
Okay, that’s a lie.
I looked back, and I made damned sure she never loved anyone else.
She’s always belonged to me.
I know I’m not a good man.
I may be dense, but I’m not a f*cking idiot.
When I get the chance to have her, I take it.
Her kiss.
Her smell.
The way she screams my name.
In the dark pit of my life, she’s the only salvation.
And I’ll destroy anything that tries to take her from me again.

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
My review:

Below the Line is the fifth book in the Birch Police Department series by April Canavan.  Reading them in order is best but each book can be read as a standalone.  I have come to really love this series and all the characters.  The books are well written and will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.  One minute I was crying and the next I was laughing from all the snarky dialogue and good nature teasing between the characters.  This book was more serious than the previous books and was a heartbreaker.

“If anything happened to her, I didn’t even have to think about it.  I would burn the entire world down while I smiled and welcomed the death that would bring me back to her”

At eighteen years old, Logan had watched Teri die when she was shot.  He still feels guilty for it and thinks he doesn’t deserve her, but he can’t let her go.  Teri was ready to let go of her dreams of a future with Logan.  When an enemy from their past appears Logan will do anything to keep her safe.

This was an amazing story and I’ve really enjoyed every book in the series.  All the characters were likable, and I enjoyed meeting them all.  This is a series that I can see myself rereading in the future.  I cannot wait for the next release in the Birch County series.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Chloe
A folded up flag is all that remains.
My brother lost overseas.
And every single day, I face the man who walked away.
The man who couldn't save him.
The one I blame, even if he's not at fault.
He haunts every step I take, and I can't escape.
I'm not sure I can convince him to let me go.
I'm definitely not strong enough to admit the truth.
I never stopped loving him.

Ian
The sight of her holding that flag will haunt me until the day I die.
One night.
One mistake.
One failed mission.
Two families ruined forever.
The right thing to do is walk away.
Especially when I see rage in her eyes.
She doesn’t need the trouble I’ll bring her way.
There’s only one thing I’m good for.
And it sure as hell doesn’t include fixing her problems.
With my expertise, I can break her down and tear her apart.
I just can’t put her back together again.
But she’s in my blood, and I can’t let her go.
She might be shattered and broken, but I never wanted her perfect.
I just want her.

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
My review:
Break it Down is the fourth book in the Birch Police Department series. I have become hooked on the series, and they keep getting better and better. They are full of humor, sparking chemistry, and alpha heroes.  This was Ian and Chloe’s story, and they were such a cute couple.  They had a history between them, and the book starts after Chloe’s brother died and she has ended her relationship with Ian.  Ian never gave up on Chloe and always stood beside her even when she did not want him there.  All their friends were there to support her and help her with her loss.  They were even willing to participate in the humous bucket list her brother had left for them.  It was a heart-breaking story, but the ending was worth all the tears shed throughout the book.  I hope to see Kevin’s story in the future.  This book portrays him as being the funny one in the group and I would love to see him get a happy ending after all the pain he dealt with in this book.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Emma
You can do it.
The last words my brother ever said to me.
I’ve got one chance to prove him right.
And nothing is going to stop me.
Not even a tall, sexy cop, armed with a glare that melts panties.
Too bad I don’t have time to go to war with him.
Because I could think of a dozen different ways to bring him to his knees.
I can’t afford to pay the price of failure.
But the way he looks at me… Makes me want to break every promise I’ve ever made.

Dominic
She’s a goddamn menace.
I want her, but some lines shouldn’t be crossed.
Nothing she says will change that.
She’s on a mission, but so am I.
And she’s my target.
We both know she doesn’t stand a chance.
But while my eyes are on her… I can’t see the threat on the horizon.
There’s only one option, and I’ve got to bite the bullet.

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
My review:

Bite the Bullet is the third book in the Birch Police Department series.  I must admit the author was new to me until I started this series and I have become hooked on them.  I have had to go back and start reading from the beginning after finishing this book.  The books keep getting better and better.  There is a lot of humor, witty banter, and sparking chemistry in each book.  The women are spunky and brave.  I love seeing the men having fun and bantering between themselves one minute then turn into possessive alpha heroes.  This book was Emma and Dominic’s story and we met them in previous books.  Actually, all of the characters can be found in every book since the men and women are related or close friends to the families.  Dominic loved Emma but knew that he should stay away from her since he had two weeks before he was deployed.  Emma did not know why Dominic avoided her, but she knew she loved him and wanted to be with him.  She feels betrayed when he doesn’t tell her he is leaving.  I was disappointed in Emma’s refusal to communicate with Dominic while he was deployed.  I had hoped she would realize why he had to leave and be more supportive of him.  I could not help cheering for Dominic even though he should have told Emma before he had to leave.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
