My review:
An Officer and a Fortune is the fifth book in the Fortunes of Texas: The Hotel Fortune series. I’ve read two books in the series but do not feel as if I missed anything by not reading them all. So far, I have loved every book in the series and this one was just as good. It was paced perfectly, had charming characters, and was beautifully written. I love small-town romances because they always have such warm friendships and thoughtful characters in them. This story took place in the small-town of Rambling Rose where the Fortune family has recently moved to. They have been trying to rejuvenate and bring new businesses and people to Rambling Rose.
Captain Collin Waldon is stationed in Germany but has come home on leave to take care of Sam, his terminally ill father. He is feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with Sam but meeting Nicole and spending time with her brightens his day. He’s attracted to her but knows long-distance relationships do not work so he holds back on his attraction.
Nicole Fortune is the executive chef of Roja, the family-owned restaurant in the Hotel Fortune. Her creativity has been on the decline and she is struggling to develop the summer menu. The restaurant was having difficulties with employees leaving and losing business to a local diner. The connection she feels with Collin and their shared love of cooking prompts Nicole to ask Collin to help her create her summer menu and help with the upcoming family fundraiser.

Although I have read a few of the books in the series, I do think reading the entire series in order would improve the overall reading experience. The Fortune family’s businesses have experienced sabotage, and each book and incident add to the mystery of who could be plotting against them. Neither Nicole nor Collin was looking for a relationship but once they meet each other and connected it was too late. The connection between them could be felt from the beginning. I was so glad that Collin was able to finally have a meaningful conversation with his father. That scene was heartbreaking but helped Collin to understand his father and the past. Nicole and Collin were able to help each other through some difficult times and were so supportive of each other. I would have liked to see more of their future lives together, but I am sure we will see them in future books. This was a sweet romance that will leave you grinning at the end and looking forward to the next Fortune adventure.

My review:

Fade Into You is the fourth and final book in the LA Rock Star Romance series. This was a new-to-me author, so I have not read the previous books. Reading this as a stand-alone was acceptable but I think if you read the stories from the beginning it would help you understand the family dynamics. This is Vince’s story, and it starts off in the middle of a scene that feels like it was led into by the previous book. So, it was a little confusing to start with but eventually, it started to make sense. The book was fast-paced and the characters had many layers.
Vince Davis is the lead singer in a rock and roll band and his oldest son has recently died from a drug overdose. He has just discovered that his label company had been helping his son’s addiction and wants to split from the label. Lydon Johnson’s husband was a lead singer in the band Ear Assassins’, and he had overdosed six years. She and the remaining band members were trying to leave the label company and were in a dragged-out legal battle. Her funds are low, and she needs to have a way to support herself and her son. She has always hated being in the media spotlight but that went along with having a famous father and husband. Even though the thought of being on a TV reality show is horrible she is out of options. Vince’s ex-wife has been causing him trouble with the media and so Vince and Lydon decide to help each other out by being fake lovers.
This was a book that I enjoyed reading but I do wish I had read the previous ones first. The lack of communication was the biggest issue between Vince and Lydon. They were both trying to protect themselves from heartbreak. They both had a past of loss of a spouse and family members overdosing with drugs. This book has created an interest in previous books so I will probably go and read the series from the beginning.

She reached up to adjust his glasses for him, but he was in the midst of transferring his clipboard from one hand to the other, and managed to bonk her on the head at the same moment she pushed his glasses. “Ow,” she said as her hand jerked. The unfortunate timing meant that instead of putting his glasses to rights, she knocked them all the way off his face. “Crap,” she exclaimed. “I’m so sorry!” He dove to grab for them, but they landed on the floor with an audible clunk. How heavy were those glasses? His clipboard went next, slithering from his grip as he focused on the glasses. It too clattered onto the floor. “Let me help,” she began, but he held up a hand to stop her. “Please, there’s no need.” She took a step back, feeling foolish. A sound came from her phone. Damn. She’d never ended the call with Toni. Wincing, she brought her phone to her ear. Toni was laughing so hard she could hardly get a word out. “What did I just hear?” she gasped. “Was that the handsome Dr. Finnegan?” “You shouldn’t eavesdrop. I’m hanging up now.” “I know there’s something going on between you.” “I told you already what’s going on.” “Yeah well, you didn’t tell the whole story. What I just heard was a throwback to teenage Chrissie, the one who always lost her cool around a boy she liked.” “Hanging up now.” “You can hang up, but you can’t hide.” She hung up and shoved her phone into the pocket of her flight suit. Ian finally had his glasses back in the proper place, and his clipboard under his arm, and was putting himself to rights. “I’m really sorry about that, Ian. Chaotic Chrissie strikes again. Are your glasses okay?” “They’re fine. You?” “I’m fine. Embarrassed, but fine. I was on my way to get a hot chocolate, can I make it up to you with a hot beverage that I promise not to spill on you?” “I’m on my way to a consult, but maybe later?” “I only have another,” she checked her watch, “ten minutes.” She stepped aside to allow him to pass. “I don’t want to hold you up any more than I already have.” “No, it’s…you didn’t…I’m glad I…” The words seemed to bunch in his mouth, and he shook his head in frustration. “I’ve been hoping I’d…you’d…” She saw in a flash that he was affected by her presence. Stammering like a teenager. A sense of joy seized her—and freedom, as if bright wings were lifting her out of gravity. Without a second of forethought, she rose onto her tiptoes and kissed Ian on the mouth. His lips were warm and firm and fresh. For a micro-moment, it seemed he wasn’t going to respond. Too surprised? Unwilling? Uninterested? Various scenarios flashed through her brain, then evaporated as he returned her kiss—and then some. Ian might be awkward in some areas, but when it came to kissing he didn’t hesitate. He kissed her as if nothing else existed, as if there were no nurses hurrying past, no hospital walls around them. They could be floating above the roof, alone in their own private helicopter, for all the notice he took of the snickering orderly pushing a gurney past them. .
