From Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Tracy Brogan comes a sweet, funny Trillium Bay romance about moving on, creating your best self, and discovering the true meaning of love.

After her scandalous May-December romance comes to an end, baby of the family Lilly Callaghan returns home to Trillium Bay braced for the torrent of “I told you sos” from her sisters and the rest of the tiny island community. Floundering both personally and professionally, she’s at an emotional crossroads but determined to figure out her next best steps.

When a surprise job offer from her house-flipping sister reacquaints Lilly with handsome, free-spirited Wenniway Island transplant Matt Eastman, Lilly wonders if she’s ready for a new romance. Then she meets Hollywood heartthrob Jayden Pierce, who is filming a movie on the island, and she’s certain of it—but with whom? She’s caught the attention of both men, and both men have caught hers. So what’s a girl to do?

Earnest Matt shares her love of the close-knit island community, while surprisingly down-to-earth Jayden encourages her to live life outside her comfort zone. As the flirtatious triangle sets the town talking, Lilly must choose: Does she want to plant forever roots in Trillium Bay with Matt? Or follow a man who makes love stories for a living? Two very different men. Two very different futures. But deep down, Lilly knows that only one holds the promise of her kind of perfect.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Trembling between anger and vulnerability, she’d never looked more beautiful to him. Her wide eyes seemed to take up half her face, her thick lashes damp with tears. She’d been through a terrible twenty-four hours, after all. And now he’d added to it, which was the last thing he’d ever want. “You can jab me with that cactus if it’ll make you feel better.” She looked at it as if she’d completely forgotten it was in her hand. “Excuse me? That’s no way to treat a perfectly innocent plant.” He smiled, hoping that her joke meant she was feeling better. “Are cactuses innocent, though? With all those spikes?” “It’s cacti, not cactuses, and don’t you dare disrespect mine. I’ve always related to this little guy. We have so much in common. There’s the liquor connection. The South American origins. The prickly exterior.” Her voice caught and he couldn’t bear it any more. He strode toward her and caught her in his arms—gingerly, because she still held that cactus. “Toni. I’m really fucking sorry I ever made that bet. I’d rather gnaw my arm off than hurt you.” She trembled against him. He felt her long, fine-boned legs press against his thighs. His brain hazed over, and all he knew in the entire world was her. Would she believe him? Know he was being real? That he wasn’t playing some kind of game with her? “Really?” she muttered from behind her cactus. He lowered his head so he didn’t miss a word. “Do you mean the right one with the really great uppercut? Or the left one that sometimes drops and leaves you exposed?” He looked down at her, then took the cactus from her hand and set it on the desk. Cupping her head in his hands, he scanned her face. That Toni bravado undid him. Even when she was injured, hurt, confused—she kept her sense of humor. His heart gave a slow, helpless somersault, an upside down roundabout turn that left him somewhere very different when it was over. It left him at her mercy. Completely and hopelessly. “Both my arms. And my legs. All the damn body parts. You can have them. Just tell me you’re okay. Tell me you forgive me.” She blinked at him, looking a little stunned. “It matters to you that much?” “That much. Yes.” Was all his pent-up emotion showing on his face? He didn’t care. He wanted her to know how much this meant. Cautiously, braced for rejection, he tilted her head and lowered his mouth to hover above hers. “Are we okay?” “I’m still quitting the Olde Salt,” she whispered. The movement of her full lips riveted him. He wetted his own lips because his mouth had just gone dry. “I don’t care about that,” he said harshly. “I just want to know that we’re okay. You and me.” He caught her rough swallow, the shift of the muscles in her slim throat. Then another soft whisper. “We could be better.” “How? What can I do? Just tell me.” “Take me to bed,” came her answer.

EXCERPT:

Then the trees parted to reveal a covered bridge. It reminded her of a movie she adored, a sweet love story that made her cry every single time she watched it. Skylar’s arm looped around her shoulders, and he pulled her close. She glanced around to see if they were being watched. The house wasn’t even in sight now.

He took her onto the bridge, stopped in the middle, and pointed out the peaceful water below. A problem with their plan surfaced in her mind. Although she didn’t want to intrude on his thoughts, he needed to know about the trouble waiting on the horizon for them.

“Your grandmother knows we’re lying,” she said.

He scoffed. “No, she doesn’t.”

“When she took me up to your room, she mentioned Clare.” Anna stopped talking when he stiffened beside her. His arm dropped from her shoulders. She rushed on. “I didn’t know who she was talking about.”

“You didn’t tell her that, did you?”

“She caught me off guard.”

Skylar placed his hands on the railing and leaned forward, tension bunching the muscles in his upper body. After a moment a short burst of laughter parted his lips. He took a step back and looked at her, smiling. “Grandma Dot is ninety, and everyone humors her even though we know she’s not as crazy as she acts. My parents let her get away with murder. Just ignore her.”

“What if she tells your mom or dad I didn’t know about Clare?”

“I don’t think they’ll be surprised.” He shrugged as his hands slid into the pockets of his faded jeans. “They know I don’t like to talk about… the past. My family has tried to get me to spill my guts a million times. If anything, they’ll just tell me I need to open up to you before the wedding.”

Anna nibbled on her lower lip for a second, knowing she was about to cross into dangerous territory, but unable to stop herself. “If we were engaged for real, I’d want to know about your first wife.”

“What if I don’t feel like sharing?” His eyes narrowed on her face, and he folded his arms. “Then what?”

“I’d try to get you to open up to me.”

“How would you try? What would you do?”

“I’d tell you that I loved you. But if you can’t trust me, I can’t be with you.”

Stunned expression, he shook his head as if to clear it. “You would break up with me just because I don’t want to tell you everything?”

Tears pricked the backs of her eyes as her insecurities came rushing forward. She reminded herself their relationship was fake. It felt real there for a moment as if they were having a real fight, and it actually hurt that he didn’t trust her enough to open up. But none of it was real. “Never mind.”

She spun around and marched back in the direction of the house, leaving him to follow or not. Part of her wanted to run, but if his family saw, they might start to suspect. Of course, she could always tell them she was mad that he wouldn’t share information about his first wife. He called after her, but she kept going. She should thank him for reminding her that relationships were too complicated, too painful. It was a hard yet necessary lesson to learn. Even though seeing happy couples in love squeezed her heart like a vice, she was better off concentrating on her career.

Author Bio:

Kasi Blake learned that writing was her superpower when she was in the third grade. The teacher asked the students to write a short (one-page) story about a pet monster for Halloween. She heard the other kids all saying they were doing vampires and werewolves, so she chose to write about a pet mummy. Her story made the entire classroom erupt with laughter. That's when she realized words had power. Then when she was in high school she had to write a short story for a class and put it off until the last minute. While talking to friends that morning, she scribbled it out and handed it in. The teacher thought she'd plagiarized it. That's how good he thought it was, but her friends backed her up. Later in college, her writing ability saved her from a bad grade in history. It was a writing-intensive course.

What's your superpower?

She thought she’d protected her heart…

After a tumultuous childhood, nurse Jamie Westmoreland craves the comfort of predictability. She loves her quiet life in a small Texas ranching town and finally feels in control until a handsome rancher becomes her newest patient. He challenges her at every turn, but Jamie is too stubborn to admit she enjoys their sparring, and that he makes her heart race. But when his charming little cowboy son starts following her around, her long-neglected heart opens.

Thomas Tremayne, the eldest son of a well-respected local ranching family, is both mom and dad to his young son and has no plans to change. When a ranch injury requires an in-house expert, the nurse who called him out on his attitude is sent to help him heal. She’s even harder to resist on his ranch than she was at the hospital, but Thomas is determined to try—except he’s out-numbered. His son decided he wants a mom, and nurse Jamie is his choice.

Can two stubborn adults let down their guard long enough to let love in again?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

She returned his silent gaze. Something passed between them. A mercurial, unseen vibration that was felt and unexplainable. A mournful howling of a coyote in the far distance broke the moment, sending her eyes in a frightened race to search out the unseen predator. Thomas felt every one of her nerve endings jump to attention beside him. He straightened his stance into one of immediate protection from some unforeseen menace.

“Relax. It’s just a coyote calling out. He’s far away and won’t come closer. There’s no danger.”

“There’s always danger…” she responded, but not di- rected at him and spoken just above a whisper. She turned and left him alone on the porch. Had he imagined the words? No, he heard them. Coupled with the look in her eyes that had flashed in a second, it left him questioning again what it was that lay hidden in those eyes. And why in that second had he been moved to want to discover and slay whatever real or imagined dragon that caused her pain? His gaze searched the growing darkness. There were answers out there somewhere. He was determined more than ever to find them.
