I kicked my foot toward him, hoping to slam the heel of my foot into his nose. But he blocked that one, too. I tried to yank away from his grip, but doing so rocked the chair and tilted one side of it into the air. Before I could correct the center of gravity, the chair tipped over, sending me into a free fall, my nose on a collision course with the wooden planks.

But he grabbed me before I hit—one arm around my stomach, his other hand gripping my upper arm.

He pulled me into a standing position as if I weighed nothing and set me back on my feet.

“Careful,” he said, a blend of irritation and enjoyment seeping from his tone. “I’d hate to see you hurt that beautiful face of yours.”

“Because you prefer to do it yourself?”

I heard him huff a laugh-breath.

Why isn’t he letting go of me?

He stood there, his hands on my body, doing what? Staring at me? Smelling like burnt sugar.

Strange. I’d have expected him to smell like chemically rotting feet, not delicious and inviting.

“So, this is what you do?” I said, heat pooling beneath my cheeks. “Break into people’s homes and then murder them if they happen to come inside?”

No answer.

“What an exemplary member of society we have here,” I snarled.

“Let me give you some advice.” His tone was low and even.

“This ought to be good. Advice from a criminal. I’m waiting with bated breath.”

He tightened his grip around my waist until my chest pushed into his. “You’re bound and blindfolded and at my mercy. Provoking the very person who holds your life in his hands is unwise.”

My review:

Combust is the second book in the Bradford Station series by Laramie Briscoe. This was a new-to-me author and series, but I had no problems reading it as a standalone. The book was well written, and the pacing was perfect. Cameron and Natalie were likable characters, and their issues could be real-life. Cameron had trust issues after his wife abandons him and their baby, so I enjoyed seeing him grow and learn to trust Natalie. Natalie was great and I loved how she kept her feelings hidden but still was there for Cameron whenever he needed her. She was already a part of their family, but Cameron had to grow to see it for himself. I enjoyed this book and hope to see Gauge find his happiness in the future. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My review:

This is a book you don’t want to miss out on.  It was steamy, funny, revengeful, and even had some intrigue.  I always love the enemy to lover’s trope but this one was on its own level.  I loved watching all the push and pull between Ben and Makayla as they battle their way to coupledom.  The main character’s reunion had a cute-remeet and was full of spice.  The surprises and twists and turns kept me engaged until the end.  This was a pretty new author to me, but I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait to read more from the author.

This is Maverick and Jade’s story who we met in the previous books. After her business and her relationship crash, Jade decides to move to Montana, where her best friend lives, to start over.  Starting a new business venture kept her busy, but she couldn’t help falling for Maverick. Maverick had never let a woman get too close but Jade someone squeezed between the walls around his heart.  After a childhood with his mother abandoning his family, he convinced himself he never wanted to marry and have children.  Then when he saw his two friends settling down, he wanted that but thought he would never find someone he trusted enough to risk his heart on.
