Blurb:
A Forbidden Lovers/Firefighter Workplace Romance

He’s a hotshot firefighter who lives on the edge. She’s his captain’s daughter…and his new boss.

Chef Zoe Westin’s number-one priority is making sure no one goes hungry in her hometown of Fairview. Running a soup kitchen is also the perfect way to prove to her dad that helping people doesn’t always mean risking life and limb. After all, the dangers of being a firefighter broke up her parents’ marriage, and she’s only interested in playing it safe.

But when Zoe is saddled with a gorgeous firefighter doing community service after yet another daredevil stunt, the kitchen has never been so hot.

Alex Donovan thrives on adrenaline, and stirring a pot of soup doesn’t exactly qualify. He’s not an expert at following the rules either, not even when they come from the stubborn, sexy daughter of the man who's not only his captain, but his mentor. He’s stuck with by-the-book Zoe as his boss for four whole weeks, his fate as a firefighter in her hands.

The fact that she tempts him at every turn on top of everything else? Yeah, that only adds fuel to the fire.

Determined to show Zoe that not every risk ends in catastrophe, Alex challenges her, both in the kitchen and out. One reckless step leads to another, but will falling for each other be a risk worth taking, or will it just get them burned?

Reckless is an updated version of the full-length novel that was originally published in 2016. This edition has been edited for readability and added steam.

My review:

Wow! Reckless was a great book to start the new Rescue Squad series. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn’t put the book down until I reached the end. It was easy to read, and the characters were so easy to fall in love with.

Zoe Westin returned home after leaving her successful career as a chef to start Hope House, her soup kitchen. She needed reliable help and definitely didn’t need Alex Donovan, the firefighter known for his recklessness, causing trouble for her.

…Going through life on a bunch of should-haves and maybes was about as appealing as a prostate exam with a root canal chaser…

A bad decision and reckless behavior got firefighter Alex Donovan stuck doing community service for four weeks. He thought he could smooth-talk his way out of trouble but quickly learned his getting-out-of-trouble luck was blotched when it came to Zoe Westin.

Zoe and Alex were opposites; Zoe played it safe and never took risks whereas Alex thought life was too short to let it pass by. While working together, they learned there could be good in risk and playing it safe. They balanced each other so well and made the perfect couple. This was the perfect book to start the series and led us into the next book, which is Cole and Savannah’s book. I highly recommend reading this book and cannot wait for the next one.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Synopsis

Harlow

I’d started to dread going to work. Until each shift began with a sultry smile from the hottie in a hard hat.

My work in the ER was stressful. Add a longer walk in the sweltering Florida sun because of a hospital remodel, and there was no motivation to go.

Well, except for him.

All bronze and beautiful, he’s a fantasy come to life.

But if a guy like that wanted to settle down, it wouldn’t be with someone with my baggage.

Doesn’t matter. I’m too smart to hook my dreams on another blue collar Beefcake. Any man for that matter. Those only come true in romance novels.

But I can still look. Right?

Harrison

What was I thinking, starting a construction business in Florida? Even dollar signs couldn’t tempt me to arrive at the work site early.

But she could.

I thought the oppressive heat had melted my brain. Is this beauty a mirage? No woman has ever gotten me excited for merely a glimpse of her.

Yet I keep building the wall between us. Flirty moments are all I can chance. There’s no place in my life for more.

As much as I’m dying to make her mine.

I plop down in an empty seat and look up to see Shay coming my direction with a huge grin on her face. She’s worked with me at the hospital for years. While I’m permanently located in the emergency room, Shay floats to any department that needs her. So when she’s working with me in the ER, it’s a real treat.

“What a great surprise, huh? And it’s air conditioned.” She beams.

“I know. I still haven’t recovered from the shock,” I reply, settling in to the unexpected ride as if we’ve been given limo service instead of an old school bus touched up for the purpose of getting employees on the job quicker.

I tap my lip with my fingertip, reflecting on the sign at the entrance to the small bus. Courtesy of Hightower Construction. Figures. It wasn’t the hospital administration thinking about us at all. It was the construction company. Working all day under the harsh Florida sun, I’m certain their crew appreciates this small bit of generosity better than anyone. They’ve probably set this up for their other clients too, likely a selling feature to gain new building contracts in the area. Well, whatever their motivation, they’re to be commended. It’s nice to see the hospital doing business with a company that cares.

The bus feels as if it’s barely picked up speed before it’s slowing down to let us off. The distance from the shuttle stop to the ER doors seems so much shorter when you’re cool and comfortable.

“I almost want to ask him if he’ll make another loop before we have to get off.” Shay giggles as she stands from her seat.

Everyone gathers their belongings and exits the bus. There’s a low hum of appreciation at our good fortune as we all head to our final destination. Once I step down, I’m surprised to find the driver hasn’t let us off at the front entrance, but across the street. Heck, I’m not complaining. There’s probably a rule against blocking incoming traffic.

Shielding my eyes, I instinctively peer up into the overpowering rays of the sun to see the rugged hard hat hottie positioned on a platform a floor above me. As predicted, he’s staring down at me with a toothy grin, his bronze skin glistening in the summer heat.

“He’s so freakin’ hot,” Shay moans.

“Yeah.” I’m practically drooling at the sight. “Do you think if we accidentally broke something inside they’d let him come in and fix it?”

“Gah. One could hope.” Shay giggles. “But then again, none of the nurses would get anything done.”

I watch as he lifts his bright yellow hat from his head long enough to run a large muscular hand through his dark blonde hair, his smile never wavering.

Shay leans in to me and releases a heavy sigh. “I bet women just throw themselves at him wherever he goes.”

“Uh huh.” I breathe, biting into my lower lip as I picture him catching me, all toned and tan, his pecs and abs on full display.

“You two better get a move on or you’re going to be late,” Gretchen says as she walks by. It’s at that moment I realize the van has made a second loop in the time we’ve been ogling this sexy specimen.

I give him a short wave and a coy smile as I make my way to the entrance doors. It’s fleeting, this exchange at the start of each shift. There’s no obnoxious cat calls or whistles. It’s all in fun. Heck. He’s probably got a wife and kids. It’s not that I’d ever act on it. But that short greeting puts a spring in my step as I start my shift. And around here, much like the shuttle bus, that’s a rare delight.

“Harlow. How do you like that? We can start the shift without needing to wring out our clothes first.” Sadie laughs.

“She might still need to.” Shay gives me a knowing grin. “All buff and beautiful was giving her his usual welcome to work greeting.”

I can’t keep from smiling. “Yeah, he has about the same effect on me that sweltering walk used to.”

Chip noticed Keith sit straighter in his chair. He turned around, following his gaze. “Keith?”

“That’s her, isn’t it?”

“Sure looks like her.”

“Who?” Max asked.

“You wouldn’t remember. Your ass was asleep when we stopped for coffee on our last trip here,” Chip said.

Keith watched two women, one blond and the other a redhead, as they sashayed through the room and cozied up to the bar. He scanned the blond from head to toe. She was dressed in casual elegance with flowing dress pants, a sweater, and his favorite—cowboy boots. The women ordered drinks, and the redhead sat captivated by something the blond was saying. Would she remember the morning they met?

Chip slowly turned and bowed his head so no one could see them talking. “I haven’t gotten a good look at her face. It’s been what, a month? I can’t swear it’s her even though she looks like I remember her. But seriously, Keith, what are the odds?”

“I’m not a betting man, Chip, but I’ll bet you a thousand-dollar bonus that it’s her.” He continued to watch the women from the corner of his eye. The blond swirled her ruby red drink and brought it to her lips, causing Keith to lick his. Without diverting his gaze, he motioned the bartender over.

“Compliments of the gentleman,” the bartender said as he set drinks down in front of the ladies and signaled in the direction of the gentleman.

Michelle and Jackie spun their barstools and held up the drinks in the direction of the man as a thank you. When Michelle’s gaze locked with the man against the wall in the corner, her stomach dropped. It couldn’t be. She swallowed and quickly turned back to Jackie. “That’s him.”

“Who?”

“The man from Coffee Café. Remember I told you.” She stared directly into her eyes, imploring her to remember. “The doppelganger from the morning of the softball game.”

“Oh.” Jackie tried to look over Michelle’s shoulder. “Are you sure?”

“I told you I wouldn’t forget those eyes.”

“One of them is coming over here,” Jackie said as she rotated toward the bar.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” a male voice said from behind them.

Michelle faced the man standing between her and Jackie. Thankfully her back was to the man with the whiskey eyes. “Yes?”

“My boss asked if by chance he could get your phone number.” He held his hands up. “I know in this day and time, it’s not safe to do that, but I give you my word, it’s secure.”

“Your word? And who are you? And who is he, for that matter?” Michelle canted her head in question.

“I’m Chip Felder. I’m the personal assistant to Keith Mason.” He raised his eyebrows expecting her to know the name. “And that’s my boss.” He indicated the man in the corner.

Michelle laughed. “Right, and I’m the Queen of England.”

Chip blinked. “I’m serious.”

“Look, Chip. Is it all right for me to call you Chip?”

“Yes.”

“Your boss over there looks like Keith Mason. Yes, it’s been all over the news that he’s coming to town in a few weeks. But if he were here and that were him, people would be all in his business. The news hasn’t reported anything about him being here, so if your boss wants to speak with me . . .” Michelle looked at Jackie, whose face was flushed. “He can reach out to me on the dating app I use. Then we’ll see if he is who you say he is.”

Chip smiled. “And what dating app is that?”

“MyPrivacy.”

Chip’s eyes widened. “Exclusive site.”

“Yes, because I like—”

“Your privacy. Got it. I’ll let him know.”

“Thank you, and please tell him thank you for the drinks.”

“His pleasure,” Chip said as he walked away.

Michelle tilted her head to watch Chip out of the corner of her eye. The man pulled out his phone, and Chip typed on the screen. Michelle looked at Jackie. “Can you believe that?”

Jackie leaned close and whispered, “I think it may really be him.”
